It's the kind of accident that feels random until you realize the warning signs were there all along, just nobody looked.

That freeze-thaw cycle where moisture works its way into wood and fastener gaps, then expands as it freezes happens dozens of times between November and March. Every cycle puts a little more stress on the connections, the footings, and the wood itself.
By the time May rolls around, a deck that looked perfectly fine when you covered it in October may have shifted, cracked, or softened in places you can't see from the surface. This isn't scare tactics it's just Minnesota. Experienced deck builders in this state build with that reality in mind, but older decks or ones that weren't built to current standards are especially vulnerable.
So before the first outdoor dinner of the season, walk through this checklist. Grab a flathead screwdriver and your reading glasses if you need them. It takes maybe twenty minutes.
The Deck Safety Checklist: What to Check and How
1. Start With the Ledger Board
The ledger board is the piece of wood bolted to your house that one side of the deck hangs from. It's hidden behind the decking surface and often partially covered by siding or flashing, but it's the single most important structural connection on your deck.
What you're looking for: any visible rot or discoloration where the board meets the house, flashing that's pulling away, gaps between the ledger and the house framing, or rust staining running down from the bolt locations. Any of those is worth flagging.
Probe it with your screwdriver. If the wood gives easily or feels spongy rather than solid, that's rot and rot at the ledger is serious. It's not a "keep an eye on it" situation. It's a call-a-professional situation.
2. Check Every Railing Post Really Check Them
Don't just glance. Grab each railing post and push hard, side to side and front to back. A properly installed railing post should feel like it's going nowhere. If you feel movement even a little the connection at the base is compromised.
This one gets homeowners every time. Posts that look totally solid from a few feet away can be wobbling on a weakened connection underneath. That's the railing your guest grabs for balance at the top of the stairs.
Railing height matters too. Minnesota code requires guardrails on decks that are 30 inches or more above grade, and those railings need to be at least 36 inches high (42 inches for higher decks). Baluster spacing should prevent a 4-inch sphere from passing through. If your deck is older, there's a reasonable chance the railings don't meet current standards.
3. Walk Every Inch of the Decking Surface
Do this slowly and deliberately, pressing down as you walk. You're listening for unusual flex or creaking and feeling for soft spots. A small amount of surface flex is normal, especially with older wood decking. But if a board moves significantly underfoot, or if it sounds hollow rather than solid, the framing underneath may be rotted or the board itself may be failing.
Look at the boards visually too. Cupping, splitting, and checking (the small cracks along the grain) are normal aging in wood. Wide cracks running perpendicular to the grain, or boards that are separating from their fasteners, are more concerning. Pay extra attention to boards near the house, around planters or anything that holds moisture, and at the top of stairs where traffic is heaviest.
4. Look Underneath Actually Get Under There
Most homeowners never look at the underside of their deck. That's exactly why problems hide there.
If you can access the space under your deck, take a flashlight and look at the joists, beams, and posts. You're looking for cracks running along the grain in beams (normal), cracks running across the grain (not normal), dark staining that indicates moisture, and any wood that looks visually deteriorated. Post bases should be sitting properly in their hardware, not resting on soggy ground or concrete that's cracked and heaving.
Check where joists connect to the beam and ledger. Joist hangers should be fully nailed, flush, and rust-free. Missing nails in joist hangers are surprisingly common on older decks and genuinely affect structural capacity.
5. Inspect the Stairs Carefully
Stairs take more abuse than any other part of a deck. They're the highest-traffic zone, they're exposed to water running off the deck surface, and they're often the last thing that gets maintained.
Check each stair tread for rot or excessive wear. Grab the stair stringers (the diagonal side supports) and check for cracks, especially at the notches where the treads sit that's where stringers fail. Make sure the handrail is solid and continuous. A wobbly stair handrail on a set of exterior steps is a fall risk, full stop.
6. Check the Footings and Posts
Walk around the perimeter and look at where your deck posts meet the ground. In Minnesota, footings are supposed to be poured below the frost line at minimum 42 inches in most parts of the state. If footings are too shallow, the freeze-thaw cycle will slowly push them out of the ground, which throws off the entire load path of the deck.
Look for posts that appear to have shifted or are no longer plumb. Look for concrete footings that have cracked or tilted. If the post bases are embedded directly in the ground without a metal post bracket keeping them off the concrete, moisture is sitting against the end grain of the post and end grain rot is fast.
7. Check Your Hardware and Fasteners
Take a close look at the visible fasteners the screws, bolts, and joist hanger nails. Surface rust on screws is mostly cosmetic. But significant corrosion on structural bolts (especially ledger bolts) can actually affect their holding strength. Same with joist hanger nails that have rusted to the point of thinning.
This one is easy to miss because rusted hardware looks like it's doing its job right up until it isn't.
What to Do If You Find Something Concerning
Here's where a lot of homeowners get stuck. They find something a soft spot, a wobbly post, a suspicious-looking ledger and then they either panic or convince themselves it's probably fine.
Neither extreme is helpful.
If what you found is minor surface wear some checking in the boards, surface rust on screws, a little stain fading that's routine deck maintenance and repair territory. Reseal, replace the isolated bad board, tighten loose screws, and move on. You don't need to call anyone for that.
